Views of the Cordilleras and Monuments of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas: A Critical Edition (Alexander von Humboldt in English) by Alexander von Humboldt (Author), Vera M. Kutzinski (Editor), Ottmar Ette (Editor). In 1799, Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland set out to decide whether or not the Orinoco River connected to the Amazon. But what began as a visit to analyze a comparatively minor geographical controversy became the basis of a five-12 months exploration throughout South America, Mexico, and Cuba. The discoveries amassed by von Humboldt and Bonpland had been staggering, and far of as we speak’s data of tropical zoology, botany, geography, and geology will be traced again to von Humboldt’s quite a few records of these expeditions.
One of these accounts, Views of the Cordilleras and Monuments of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, firmly established Alexander von Humboldt as the founder of Mesoamerican studies. Inside Views of the Cordilleras-first revealed in French between 1810 and 1813-von Humboldt weaves collectively magnificently engraved drawings and detailed texts to achieve multifaceted views of cultures and landscapes throughout the Americas. In doing so, he presents an alternative perspective on the New World, combating presumptions of its belatedness and inferiority by arguing that the “previous” and the “new” world are of the same geological age.
This important edition of Views of the Cordilleras-the second volume within the Alexander von Humboldt in English sequence-accommodates a brand new, unabridged English translation of von Humboldt’s French textual content, as well as annotations, a bibliography, and all sixty-9 plates from the original version, many of them in color.
What is so great about this book is all the work that clearly went into it. This ebook is a real assemblage of all the varied pieces/sources that connect it in one place. The textual content by Humboldt is clearly not new - what's new here is the translation and that your complete text and illustrations are revealed at one time in one place. Although the original Humboldt textual content might be not something for somebody without background information on Humboldt, the introduction alone makes this e-book valuable. It places Humboldt and especially this work in its correct place in history.
At the end of the book the notes on the text and the notes on the books owned and possibly used by Humboldt are invaluable to any researcher. This guide once more clearly reveals Chicago College Press's commitment to publishing top quality history.
This ebook was a labor of love and is really an incredible feat!
